​The Acre is one of Lowell’s oldest and most iconic communities. Just west of downtown and bordered by the canal system, it has long been a landing place for new immigrants. Each wave brought its own food, faith, and culture, helping to shape the neighborhood’s character.

​​​Historically packed with tenements and boarding houses for mill workers, the Acre developed a strong sense of community grounded in churches, cafés, mutual aid societies, and local businesses. Today, that legacy lives on in its storefronts, kitchens, and sidewalks. This tour is about more than what we eat—it's about who makes the food, and the neighborhood that made them.
