We hope you'll join us for the launch of Charlie Gargiulo's recently released book, Legends of Little Canada: Aunt Rose, Harry’s Bookland and My Captain Jack. This free event will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on October 4 in CBA’s newly remodeled youth space, 517 Moody Street, 2nd Floor. You can even purchase your very own signed copy!
As a youth in the 1960’s, Charlie watched as his Little Canada neighborhood in Lowell was razed – homes, businesses, hopes, and dreams intentionally destroyed -- in the name of urban renewal. The devastation it wrought led Charlie to become a celebrated community organizer and founder of CBA, galvanizing the community to ensure that Lowell’s Acre neighborhood did not suffer the same fate.
Legends recounts Charlie's childhood in Little Canada and the devastating loss his family, friends, and neighbors suffered as Little Canada, literally disappeared, block by block.
Also making an appearance will be another legendary community organizer, Michael Patrick MacDonald, author of All Souls, A Family Story from Southie, which chronicles his childhood growing up in the projects in South Boston. MacDonald provided a testimonial for Charlie's book.
“We're honored and excited to have two unbelievable community organizers under one roof!” said Yun-Ju Choi, CBA Executive Director. “Charlie has long served as our moral and mission-driven compass. His book is a loving tribute which brings to life the importance of neighborhood preservation and seeking and honoring the voices of our community. You won’t want to miss this event.”
Published by Loom Press – founded by Lowell stalwarts Paul Marion and Rosemary Noon – Legends of Little Canada is also available online through Loom Press and at Lala Books on Market Street in downtown Lowell.
